Installing plumbing for a fridge might seem like a tricky task, especially if you’ve just bought a new fridge with a water dispenser or ice maker. You might be wondering, Can I do this myself?
In this blog, we’ll cover the detailed step-by-step process for installing a water line for your fridge and why it’s crucial for maximising your fridge’s capabilities.
If you’re wondering why plumbing is necessary for your fridge, it comes down to functionality. Here’s why it’s so important:
Fridges with ice makers require a steady flow of water to create ice on demand. Without plumbing, you’re stuck filling ice trays manually, which is both inconvenient and outdated. Plumbing ensures your ice maker always has fresh, filtered water ready for ice whenever you need it.
Water dispensers need a constant supply of water to deliver cold, filtered water at the push of a button. Plumbing keeps the dispenser running smoothly, providing you with clean, great-tasting water directly from your fridge.
Installing plumbing for your fridge can increase your home’s value. A fridge with water line connection adds convenience and a touch of luxury, making your kitchen more attractive to potential buyers or renters.
Begin by shutting off the water supply to avoid any water leaks or accidents during the installation. You can do this by turning off the valve that provides water to the sink.
Next, head under the sink and locate where the water line connects to the faucet or sink. This is the point where you’ll be tapping into the existing plumbing. You’ll need to access this connection to add a new valve for the fridge.
Insert a T-shaped valve into the waterline. This will divide the water supply into two separate connections, one to continue supplying water to the sink, and the other to supply water to your fridge. If there is a tap directly connected to the waterline, you’ll need to remove it and replace it with the T-valve.
Now, connect one side of the T-valve to the waterline. The other side should be connected to the water tap or sink, depending on your setup. In the centre of the valve, a small hole will be left open for attaching the water pipe that will lead to the fridge. Make sure the valve is tightened securely to prevent any leaks.
Take a braided water supply hose and attach one end to the centre hole of the T-valve. To ensure a leak-free connection, use an O-ring to secure the pipe. Tighten the connection carefully. If the waterline runs under the sink, you will need to drill a small hole in the cabinet to allow the pipe to pass through and reach the sink or tap area.
Now that the water supply is connected, take the other end of the braided hose and attach it to the fridge’s water inlet at the back. Push the pipe onto the connection, and secure it tightly using another O-ring. For added peace of mind, wrap some tape around the connection to ensure it remains sealed as you move the fridge back into position.
Once everything is securely in place, turn the water supply back on and let the water flow into the fridge’s built-in water tank. Test the water dispenser by flushing about 8-10 glasses of water through it. This will help ensure that the water line is working properly. Finally, check for any leaks along the pipework and tighten connections as needed.
If you notice a water leak, check that the connections are tight. Always turn off the water supply before making any adjustments to avoid further issues.
If the water dispenser or ice maker isn’t dispensing enough water, it could be a problem with water pressure. This might be caused by a kinked hose or a blockage in the water line.
If the fridge isn’t getting any water, first ensure that the shutoff valve is fully open. If it is, the issue could be with the fridge’s water inlet valve.
